There are many different types of winding machines, such as the coil, foil, paper, rope or filament. However, in this article we will look at the filament winding machines.
Filament winding technique is used to make composite materials. These materials would be produced from two or even more substances which are chemically and physically different. The filaments will be twisted round a molded form known as a mandrel or male mold. Most of the common types of filaments used are aramid fibers, glass and carbon. This technique is particularly important for the products used in the industrial and aviation sectors.
This winding process is highly automated, so it generally gives exact and precise measurements. For this process, fibrous material would be drenched in a resin bath and then coated with low to moderate molecular reactants. This fiber will then be collected from round spools and then wound round the mandrel. During the winding process, epoxy resin, polyester resin or epoxy would be poured over the material.
Filament machine would put or wind fibers continuously on the surface of the mandrel in a specific geometric pattern. The manufactures of the composite materials will use this machine to create lightweight, strong and durable materials which are much stronger than the steel.
As mentioned above, these winding machines will use fibers which are coated in resin and this would be cured following the winding process. Once curing takes place in a curing oven or at room temperature, the mandrel will be removed to leave a hollow structure. After this, these structures will be put to use as tanks and towers, duct work and pipes, smokestacks and support structures.
These winding equipments utilize many different axes to create materials in a certain pattern. Basically, the mandrel or spindle will move on a spinning axis and will be accompanied by additional axes, like a yaw motion or a rotating eye axis. With these additional axes, the filament winder will have enough flexibility to create complex and precise patterns. Several winders can also place fibers in specific areas as necessary to ensure that there are characteristics like thermal stability. It is possible for multiple spindle winders to produce complex shapes other than the round ones, as well as produce very small or large parts.
Filament winding machines are generally used to construct different products which include missile housings, aircraft fuselages and spacecraft nose cones. By using uninterrupted lengths of sturdy fiber glass or carbon fiber, this machine can also produce other components for engineering, military and defense like the large blades in wind turbines. These machines are computer numerically controlled units which employ automation operated motions to produce specific elements.
